Why Every Family Needs a Preparedness Plan
A practical family plan can reduce confusion during emergencies and make important information easier to find when it matters.
A family preparedness plan is simply an organised answer to a difficult question: if something serious happened tomorrow, would the people I love know what to do and where to find the information they need?
Start with contacts
Write down emergency contacts, close relatives, doctors, faith/community contacts and the people who should be informed first.
Know your protection
Check whether you have life insurance, funeral insurance, ambulance cover, superannuation benefits or other protection. Do not assume another family member knows.
Organise documents
Keep identification, wills, insurance policy information, important account contacts and property or tenancy information organised and securely accessible to the right people.
Discuss funeral wishes
Families do not need a detailed funeral plan, but knowing basic wishes about burial or cremation, faith traditions, preferred location and significant songs or readings can prevent uncertainty.
Review annually
People move, policies change and contact details become outdated. Put a yearly reminder in the calendar to review the family plan.
